On August 7th, 8:01 pm PST/ 11:01pm EST, Mercury, newly retrograde, will move backwards to conjunct Venus in Virgo, at 3 degrees. Conjunctions powerfully blend energies; in this case our mental/ brain functions, the way we think, learn, and communicate will be blended with what we value, attract, and connect with. Mercury rules Virgo, while Venus is in her fall here. But this Mercury is also moving backwards, giving us circumstances that prompt reviews, delays, and internal questioning. There’s nothing bad about this, but perhaps it could be annoying.
I’m not going to sugar coat it; in less than two weeks we have some challenging astrology to contend with. We have some serious heavy players in squares and oppositions, and some big T Square energy. These aspects are a universal kick in the pants, or push down the stairs, so to speak. There’s some challenging circumstances meeting up with some challenging emotions. We have internal and external lessons. And we have Mercury retrograde. This sounds a bit ominous; we never look forward to T Squares. But these are here to guide us forward. They are geared for growth. You don’t need to be an astrology expert to understand this. All you need to know is that all growth comes from discomfort. So that’s why: we have been building a new life all year, and we are more than halfway through the year. It's time to double check what we are doing.
Virgo is the nature lover, health nut, and scientist of the zodiac. There’s an idea and need for order, for purity, and for understanding the sum and the parts. Virgo is humble, and doesn’t buy into pomp and circumstance. So Venus in this sign acts differently. We know Venusian energy to attract riches, admirers, pomp and circumstance. But in Virgo she wants quality, communication, straightforwardness, and true acts of love and kindness. She prefers the real thing. This Venus wants to connect with what’s real, taste the raw flavor, and help when needed. Shania Twain’s song, That don’t Impress Me Much has Virgo Venus vibes.
Mercury– in Virgo, is working overdrive in classification, deconstruction, and understanding. Cylinders are firing, but perhaps too fast or too voraciously for comfort. If the channel is open, anxiety and OCD can settle in for some, and this nervous feeling or overwhelm can permeate the psyche. But not for everyone– people can feel sharper overall, and grounded in this energy. Except there’s this retrograde. Retrogrades are slowing us down, and making us pay attention. This fusion of energy between these two planets may have us annoyed, hyper vigilant, critical, or sensitive to our health regime. When mind and emotion are fused, this can also bring an evenness, or coalescence that help direct us.
If we are trying to get somewhere fast; this isn’t the time. This energy asks that we double check and take our time to get things done. This is hard if you have lots of anxiety, but also: time to breathe, walk, or work through it. This energy also asks that we do the safety check, take the measurements, or put things away properly. Venus is what we value, so there is this idea of taking good care of what matters. Mercury headed backwards is already asking us to check our contracts, terms and conditions.
There is nothing dire about the astrology here, it’s more preparatory for the more exciting days coming. In a few weeks we will have all kinds of fixed and mutable fun, with Gemini Mars and Jupiter squaring Pisces Saturn, and Taurus Uranus squaring Leo Sun. There’s more action of course, but for now this earth vibe, and what it teaches us about ourselves is on the menu.
