It’s Virgo season, my loves. I'm behind in my Understanding [insert zodiac sign here] series, so I want to say something about this threshold today.
That means we go from the Leo spotlight, fun, and pass the Courvoisier #lyfestyle of summer in the northern hemisphere (winter in the Southern hemisphere) to the mechanics of real life, making sure we have something functional to work with. In Virgo season we want to make sure that there is food in the fridge and that it is healthy, the bills are paid, the brakes on the car are working, and all the details are taken care of. You can learn more about today’s astrology in the last bit of my first YouTube vid.
Virgo gets a bad rap as being too serious, thrifty, critical, analytical, in the weeds, OCD, and introverted. Those things can always be true about Virgo. But Virgo is the scientist, the realist, essence of that which you can depend on-- that will always look out for you. Virgo is humble and it's in service to humanity. Some say that Virgo is one of the best lovers of the zodiac, which is lucky for us all– because we all have Virgo in our chart, and can please ourselves accordingly, (sit down Scorpio-- it's not October yet.) As I’ve said before, its vibe essentialist, no other sign can distill something to its essence/ core/ primary importance like Virgo. Virgo holds itself to an incredibly high standard, and will spend hours alone trying to get it right. Virgo helps, Virgo cares, and Virgo is thorough. It will double, triple, quadruple check.
I was musing recently about Burning Man– the festival in Nevada USA, and how it takes place at the beginning of Virgo season, and is built in Leo season. There is still the touch of Leo (fire, display, performance, being seen) in it, but the sheer engineering and design feats, the actual mechanics that make this thing work, and safe-ish; that’s Virgo. The first Burning Man itself was conceptualized in 1986 at summer solstice, so it has a Cancer natal chart (a container for creation- so literal.) But what has made it operationally sound– the systems, the organization required, the planning, the making sure that things blow up at the right time, the large scale welding, the making sure the sun sets in the right place to highlight the art in a different way– that’s Virgo. Also– almost all of Burning Man runs on volunteer hours: which is service; so Virgo.
It makes me laugh when I think of how so many people will work on their costumes and outfits all summer, which is very Leo, only to be called a Sparkle Pony at the festival by the grizzled volunteers who have been toiling in the dust for weeks. You can dress up for Burning Man, but the real stars will always be the art and the weather with the terrain (Virgo is an earth sign.) No one goes to the festival for a culinary or luxurious experience (well, except maybe the billionaires, but not most of us.) Many go for some sort of spiritual, essentialist experience, where you have to be cognizant of how much water you have and use, how much garbage you create, dust storms, lighting up at night so you don’t die, and– by the way have you eaten today? Of course, many go for the party, but if that’s the only reason they go, they probably will find much more, or never come back.
I mention Burning Man to show how awesomely fun Virgo can be, and how it’s often looking out for us. This part of your chart will show you how daily practices can assist you in reaching the goals of your chart. Virgo is ruled by Mercury, which is currently retrograde in Leo. It stations direct on the 28th, and re-enters Virgo on September 9th. Mercury is the part of our psyche related to how we mentally process things, understand, learn, and communicate. If you have a lot of Virgo planets, or are a Virgo rising, then this will be a significant period of time for you– but most everyone can feel the retrograde, because everyone has Mercury somewhere in their chart, and Virgo somewhere in their chart. Virgo season ends on September 22nd.
This Virgo season will probably not feel super organized at first, and you’ll have a process in finding that state as you calibrate from the most recent astrology. The planets are always teaching and preparing us for the next period, and this particular season gives us our second Lunar eclipse in September. Eclipse portals are periods of extreme growth and moving forward, and let me tell you, after the year I've had so far, I’m both scared and excited for the changes coming ahead.
I have to remind myself– and all of you– that changes are happening for us, not against us. We are always being invited to transform ourselves– sometimes physically, spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and learn what is needed from us in our future. This almost always involves getting out of our comfort zone, facing our traumas, and leaving behind what does not serve. Sometimes, we choose our comfort zone anyway, because we are scared, or lost. When we don’t take the invitation to grow, the planets get louder next time, as they will be determined to wake us up.
